Hancock County, Mississippi

Hancock County, established in 1812, was named for John Hancock, famous for his signature on the Declaration of Independence. The following are pertinent statistics about Hancock County taken from the U.S. Census Bureau:

  • Land Area: 477 square miles
  • Population (July 2008 estimate): 40,140
  • Housing Units (July 2008 estimate): 21,182

You may view a map showing the flooding sources studied in Hancock County as well as the Preliminary version of the Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM) and associated Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report for Hancock County, Mississippi and Incorporated Areas on the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality Web site. FEMA has provided updated versions of the 87 DFIRM panels, which cover the Cities of Bay St, Louis and Waveland and the unincorporated areas of Hancock County, to community officials for review. The DFIRM and FIS report should be available through the Community Map Repository in each community listed below.  The final DFIRM and FIS report, once they are produced, will also be available through the FEMA Map Service Center Web site.
